Forest Research Institute Malaysia Director General Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod has been elected as the new Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Association of Forest Research Institutions (APAFRI)

Forest Research Institute Malaysia Director General Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod has been elected as the new Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Association of Forest Research Institutions (APAFRI) at the Association’s Fifth General Assembly held on 4 October 2009 in Kuala Lumpur.

Addressing the general assembly, Dato’ Dr Abd Latif reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to hosting the Secretariat in FRIM and also announced the decision to retain its senior researcher, Dr Sim Heok-Choh, as the Executive Secretary managing the operations of the secretariat.

The new APAFRI Executive Committee for 2009-2012 comprises the following:

Immediate Past Chairman: Mr Sarath Fernando (FD, Sri Lanka)

Dr Aida Baja-Lapis, Philipines)
Prof. M. Al Amin (IFES, Bangladesh)

Dr Putera Parthama (FORDA, Indonesia)

In addition, Senior External Relations Advisor for Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)-Indonesia Dr Efransjah, who is also the former UNDP/GEF Peat Swamp Forest Project (MAL/99/G31) Chief Technical Advisor, and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Forestry Faculty Dean Dr Awang Noor Abd. Ghani were elected as the Internal Auditor.

APAFRI is an independent non-profit organisation established in 1995 with the aim of enhancing research and technology development capabilities to support the conservation and management of forest resources in the Asia Pacific region and it has a total of 61 institutional members.
