THE SUCCESS OF USM RESEARCHERS AT THE 56TH WORLD EXHIBITION OF INNOVATION, RESEARCH AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES (INNOVA) IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM & NATIONAL INNOVATION AWARD 2007

Penang, Malaysia - University Science Malaysia once again boosted the name of the country when seven of its researchers successfully won three gold medals and four silver medals, together with a special award at an international event.

University Science Malaysia once again boosted the name of the country when seven of its researchers successfully won three gold medals and four silver medals, together with a special award at the 56th World Exhibition of Innovation, Research and New Technologies in Brussels, Belgium, which was held from 22-25 November 2007.

The products include using oil absorption from degradable waste, innovative electrogenerative process to separate copper from industrial waste, fish feed for quality breeding fish feed and intelligent system for air pollution warning system. The successful researchers are as follows:

GOLD

1. Prof Mohd Zaid Abdullah for research product "Automatic Die-Counter System (Autodie)",
2. Prof Hanafi Ismail for research product "A Novel Environmental Friendly and Degradable Oil Absorbent from Mixed Waste Materials"
3. Assoc Prof Ng Wing Keong for research product "A Novel Fish Feed with Palm-E Additive to Enhance Fish Fillet Quality"

SILVER

1. Assoc Prof Fauziah Ahmad for research product "Bio-Coat for Reinforced Earth Material",
2. Assoc Prof Norita Mohamed for research product "An Innovative Electrogenerative Process for the Recovery and Removal of Metals from Industrial Effluents",
3. Assoc Prof Mohamad Nasir Mohamad Ibrahim for research product "Plating on Anything!"
4. Mr Wong Chow Jeng for research product "AirWarn Intelligent Air Pollution Warning System"

SPECIAL AWARD

Prof Mohd Zaid Abdullah for research product "Automatic Die-Counter System (autodie)".

USM is also proud that two of its lecturers, Dr. Suzina Sheikh Abdul Hamid from National Tissue Bank USM Medical Campus and Assoc Prof Sureswaran Ramadass from National Advanced IPv6 Centre, have received the National Innovation Award, presented by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur. Dr Suzina won the Innovation Award for Public Services Category, while Assoc Prof Sureswaran for Product Category.
