Twenty-nine Lingnan University scholars are listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists published in 2024 by US Stanford University. The annual rankings highlight leading scientists across a wide range of fields, based on their career-long citation impact or single-year citation impact in 2023. The recognition underscores the research excellence and academic strengths of Lingnan scholars, and the significant contributions they have made to both academia and society.
Among them is Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, who ranks first in Hong Kong in both career-long citation impact and single-year citation impact in 2023 within his academic field of Industrial Engineering and Automation.
Prof Richard Walker, the newly appointed Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Government and International Affairs, and Director of the Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS), has achieved the top ranking in Hong Kong in both categories within his academic field of Political Science & Public Administration.
Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing, ranks 2nd in Hong Kong in both categories within his academic field of Numerical and Computational Mathematics. Prof Ngai Pun, Chair Professor of Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Cultural Research and Development, is also ranked 2nd in Hong Kong in the field of Cultural Studies for both categories.
Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning, is ranked 5th in China for career-long citation impact in his academic field of Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing, and 11th nationwide in the single-year citation impact in 2023.
In addition, twelve distinguished Lingnan scholars are among the top 100 scientists worldwide in 2023 in their respective sub-fields.

Stanford University’s extensive database adopts a composite indicator based on standardised citation metrics, which includes the number of citations, the h-index (a measure of scientific research output) and co-authorship.
