Rethinking Energy; Navigating Change

10th Singapore International Energy Week

Singapore, 28 March 2017 – The Energy Market Authority (EMA) announced “Rethinking Energy; Navigating Change” as the theme for the 10th edition of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW).

The theme reflects the varied global energy landscape and the opportunities it brings. The global economy is set to pick up, although growth remains uneven. Geopolitical developments and a possible shift towards more inward-looking policies could however dampen trade and longer term growth. Imbalances between demand and supply have continued to weigh down oil and gas prices, but sustained decline in upstream investments could lead to sharp corrections in future. At the same time, renewables and grid storage continue to gain momentum as technology improves and prices fall. However, any potential dilution of international climate change commitments could set back efforts to build a sustainable energy future.

Against this backdrop, the 10th edition of SIEW will facilitate discussions on staying nimble, navigating challenges, and seizing opportunities in this evolving energy landscape. Starting on 23 October 2017, SIEW’s highlights include EMA’s anchor events – the SIEW Opening Keynote Address and the Singapore Energy Summit – that will focus on the recovery of oil & gas prices, the growth of renewables and examining energy models for the future.

EMA will also host the inaugural Singapore-International Energy Agency (IEA) Forum at SIEW 2017, to address the important issue of investments needed to meet Asia’s growing energy demand. This is a new initiative following Singapore’s joining of the IEA as an Association country last year.
SIEW’s partner conferences, the Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES), Gas Asia Summit (GAS) and Asian Downstream Summit (ADS), will return to provide new insights on energy trends throughout the week. This year’s line-up will include the EU Business Avenues in South East Asia as part of ACES’ exhibition, and the Customer Focused Utility seminar as part of the ADS. A special SIEW 10th Edition Reception will also be held this year to open a week of business networking receptions.

To kick-off the energy conversations for the year, Keisuke Sadamori, IEA’s Director of Energy Markets & Security, presented the latest IEA five-year oil market analysis and forecast report “Market Report Series: Oil 2017” at the SIEW 2017 launch today. Dwight Hutchins, Accenture’s Asia Pacific Managing Director for Strategy Consulting and Chairman of the Singapore's American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) also shared his views on global energy developments.

Similar conversations will be held throughout the year at SIEW Energy Insights forums in Beijing and Tokyo. These events will provide additional local and regional perspectives on global energy issues in the lead up to SIEW 2017 in Singapore in October.

SIEW 2017 will be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore from 23 to 27 October 2017. Registration will open on 1 July.
