Fifteen MacmillanScience titles are now available as e-books to browse and buy from February 2007 at www.macmillansciencebookstore.com.

Fifteen MacmillanScience titles are now available as e-books to browse and buy from February 2007 at www.macmillansciencebookstore.com. Macmillan Science has selected the BookStore platform to host and sell their digital content. Customers worldwide will be able to download the books in three competitively-priced industry standard formats, Adobe eReader, MS Reader and Mobipocket Reader. Alternatively readers can buy online access to the e-Books for one year. Further titles and ways to buy them are to come during 2007.

“Digital access gives many more people the chance to search, sample and purchase these critically acclaimed popular science works,” says MacmillanScience Publisher, Sara Abdulla. “Authors, reviewers and readers have been asking us for e-books since we launched in 2003 — they are flexible, future-proof and eco-friendly.”

The MacmillanScience list features entertaining, authoritative books about the drama, politics, history and implications of research and discovery. Bookstore holds, displays and sells e-book content in a secure and searchable form, while allowing the publisher to maintain full control over all copyright, licensing and pricing.

“Bookstore from MPS Technologies is a great new way to get more books to more readers,” says Richard Charkin, CEO Macmillan Publishers Ltd. “I’m very pleased that MacmillanScience, like Macmillan New Writing, can be among the first publishers to showcase e-books there thanks to their forward-thinking publishing models and courageous, enthusiastic authors.”

Each month www.macmillansciencebookstore.com will be updated with new books, novel ways of accessing them and details of author events, reviews and special offers. One week access and chapter-by-chapter packages will be added soon.

All the authors at MacmillanScience are enthusiastic about their work becoming available digitally. “I wrote my book so that other people could read my ideas and make up their own minds. Putting it online means its going to be easier to get hold of and cheaper to buy. Plus the electronic version can be searched which makes it far more useful. What author could ask for more?” says Toby Murcott, author of alternative medicine exposé The Whole Story.

“I agree. I’m delighted that readers will now have new options to enjoy my book via online courses and handheld e-readers,” says Jonathan Balcombe, author of animal behaviour exploration, Pleasurable Kingdom.

Others emphasise e-books’ positive environmental side. “I’ve always been troubled by the environmental impact of all the paper and truck miles that go into having a book on the market,” comments Dave Reay, author of Climate Change Begins at Home, “now I can rest a little easier.”

“De la Mettrie would be spinning in his grave with delight. A few clicks and anyone can read how his thinking was way ahead of its time. I'm happy too.” Chris Nunn author of De La Mettrie’s Ghost: The Story of Decisions
