Keio University 150th Anniversary
Establishment of Keio “Design the Future” Award for International Students
Offering scholarship of the highest level in Japan to excellent international students

In celebration of its 150th anniversary in 2008, Keio University has established the Keio
“Design the Future” Award for International Students, which will start from the 2008 school
year. Aiming at nurturing future world leaders, the scholarship offers living expenses, traveling
expenses and tuition fees to excellent international students (in Master’s course or
Professional degree program) so that they can concentrate on their research and studies. The
scholarship, which tops the Japanese Government Scholarship, is of the highest level in Japan.
It is quite unique as it is open to all international students who display excellence in academics
and personality, regardless of economic circumstances.

1. Outline

(1) Qualification Requirements: Keio University international students in Master’s course or
Professional degree program (and Doctoral Students of the Graduate School of Medicine)

(2) Number of students: About 5 students per year

(3) Amount of Scholarship
- Exemption from tuition and fees (including admission fee)
- Monthly living expenses of 200,000 yen
- 150,000 yen for preparation and to cover travel costs to Japan
- Total amount of the above range from 6,290,000 yen to 8,960,000 yen per person (calculation based on tuition of 2008)

(4) Period: two years

2. Main Points

(1) The scholarship is funded by “Design the Future Fund”, which was established by donations
raised through the 150th Anniversary Commemorative Project. 1 billion yen out of the total of 3
billion yen of the “Design the Future Fund” will be used for the scholarship, and by managing
this fund, the scholarship is designed to sustain for a long period of time.

(2) Selection is based only on how excellent the students are, regardless of their economic
situations. Such scholarships are common internationally (especially in the U.S.), but are very
rare in Japan. This is the first of this kind in Keio University.

(3) The scholarship offers a high amount of money.
As the scholarship covers living expenses, travel expenses and all tuition fees, the recipient can
be free from economic concerns and will be able to concentrate on their research and studies.
The conditions are much favorable than that of the Japanese Government Scholarship provided
by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

(4) The scholarship is intended for graduate students in master courses.

This aims at:
1. encouraging both students who proceed to Doctor’s course after finishing Master’s course to
become professional researchers and students who plan to get into the business sector.

2. inviting the most excellent students wishing to proceed to Doctor’s course at an earlier
timing in Master’s course.

(5) Selection of students will be made through interviews by chair persons of each Graduate
School, and as for international applicants, remote interviews using the Internet or one of 11
international offices of Keio University will be conducted.

(6) As in prestigious universities of Europe and the U.S., the recipient will be notified at the time
of being accepted entrance, which will encourage the most excellent students to decide to
study at Keio at an early timing.

3. Objectives

(1) As the competition to accept the most excellent students is increasing among the world’s
top universities, the scholarship will help invite the most excellent students who are able to
enter other prestigious universities of Europe and the U.S.

(2) In spite of the Government’s plan to invite 300,000 international students, the financial
backing of this plan is not clearly set-out, it is, therefore, significant that Keio University
establishes its own scholarship of the world’s highest level.

(3) Recipients who have finished the Master’s course of Keio University are expected to lead
the world in the future that will result in promoting the existence of Keio University.
