Prof Asma, is the recipient of various awards and fellowships including the Young Scientist Award, International Federation of Inventors Award for Outstanding Malaysian Women Inventor, Avon-Tan Sri Fatimah Malaysian Women of Distinction Award, National Invention Award and the National Innovation Award

UNIVERSITI Sains Malaysia (USM) former director of Institute of Research in Molecular Medicine (Inform) Prof Asma Ismail has been appointed the university’s new deputy vice-chancellor (research and development).

The award-winning professor who received her appointment letter from Higher Education Minister Datuk Mohd Khaled Nordin succeeded Prof Datuk Muhammad Idris Saleh and will be holding the post until 2011.

Prof Asma, 50, from Jitra in Kedah, is the recipient of various awards and fellowships including the Young Scientist Award – Medicine from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in 1991, International Federation of Inventors Award for Outstanding Malaysian Women Inventor in 1994 and Avon-Tan Sri Fatimah Malaysian Women of Distinction Award – Medicine and Science in 1996.

She was also conferred the Excellence in Invention Award by the Malaysian Inventors and Design Society in 1996 following her successful contribution in science and technology, Kelantan Woman of Distinction and National Invention Award in 2002 and the National Innovation Award by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi in 2006.
