UPM Won 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 Bronze at the BioMalaysia Exhibition 2009

Kuala Lumpur – A team of researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) walked away with 2 Gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals at the BioMalaysia 2009 exhibition held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Prof. Ir. Dr. Amin Mohd Soom from the Faculty of Engineering won the first gold with Real Time Mapping Using Apparent Electrical Conductivity (RT-MECa), a product that can immediately observe the soil variability within a field directly. The product was built with the help of his research team.

He explained, the information can be obtained immediately as opposed to the previous method that would take up 1 to 2 days hence this will certainly assist farming.

“The technology, which has been tested at Sempadan field, Selangor is able to detect the precise amount of fertilizer by determining the soil nutrient content hence allowing persistent farming. This will help decrease the cost of paddy planting and at the same time improving the lives of farmers as well as preserving the environment,” he added.

The second gold went to Prof. Dr. Fauziah Othman from the Faculty of Medicine and healh Sicence with Berberis Vulgaris Fruit Extract as a Potential Prevention Agent for Liver Cancer a health research product created from Berberis Vulgaris berries that are rich in anti-oxidants properties for treating liver diseases.

“The product can be consumed as health supplements, or as juice and tea boost immunity. The additive-free product can be taken as supplement and is available at a very reasonable price,” she said.

The 2 silver medals belong respectively to Prof. Dr. Nor Aini Ab Shukor from the Institute Tropical Forestry and Forest Product with her invention, Over Expression of Gibberellin 20 Oxidase Gene Increase of Cellulose Fiber Length in Kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L.) and Dr. Rajesh Ramasamy from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science with her product Generation and Characterisation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Human Myocardiac Tissues: A Potential Pool of Caridac Stem Cells.

She also seized an award for Mesenchymal Stem Cells Mediated Tumour Cell Suppression: A Potential Therapy for Cancer , representing Institute of Bioscience, UPM.

The bronze medals went Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tey Beng Ti (2 medals) from the Faculty of Engineering with Method for Quantitation of Recombinant Green Fluorescent Protein dan A Method for Purifying The Nucleocapsid Protein of Nipah Virus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faridah Qamaruz Zaman from the Institute of Bioscience with the Agricultural Conservatory Park, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Hakim Abdullah of Sports Academy with his product, Orthosiphon Stamineus (Misai Kucing herb) As Diuretic agent In Sports Medicine and finally to Dr. Ahmad Bustamam Abdul also representing Institute of Bioscience with his product, A Natural Compound From A Local Herbal Plant As A Potential Cure For Cervical Cancer.
