USM Widens International Ties In Fiji

USM, Penang, Malaysia - USM forged an international collaborative venture with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of The South Pacific (USP), Suva, Fiji.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has continued its tradition of enriching the field of knowledge by forging another international collaborative venture with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of The South Pacific,(USP), Suva, Fiji.

The MoU signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof.Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak who represented USM and the Acting Vice Chancellor of USP, Dr. Esther Williams, was among others, aimed at raising the academic achievement of both parties.

The MoU Signing Ceremony was witnessed by the Malaysian High Commissioner to Fiji, Dato' Nafisah Mohamed, also a member of the USM alumni.

According to Prof. Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli, USM is the first university in Malaysia to forge ties with USP with the aim of improving the standard and quality of education in the country.

'With the signing of the MoU, USM and USP will discuss and focus on academic collaboration including student and academic staff exchange at Undergraduate and Post-Graduate level'.

'There will also be cooperation in terms of research potential through various faculties in both universities,' he said in a statement here yesterday.

He added that the focus would be on collaborative research in the field of Marine Science between The centre of Marine and Coastal Studies, USM with the Faculty of Island and Ocean, USP.

'We will also provide consultative services based on the model of how distance education courses are run. This will include the delivery of courses, development of modules as well as the requisite infrastucture,' he explained.

The USM delegation , led by Prof.Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli is currently participating in MOHEX 2008, in the Republic of Fiji, aimed at promoting local academic programmes and training organized by the Ministry of Higher Education.

MOHEX 2008 is the largest event held for the promotion of education, skills development including speaking skills and human resource management.It encompasses sub-areas such as training as well as management of tertiary education. USM is participating in this event specifically for the extensive promotion of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes offered in the USM campus.
