Press conference - ‘New Dimension in Paper Recycling Technology: Bioenzymatic Deinking’

In a press conference on Thursday, 20 November, Prof. Darah Ibrahim from Universiti Sains Malaysia a new chemical free paper recycling technology which uses sugar cane and palm oil waste to absorb ink from the paper to be recycled.

The press conference will be held at Taman Buku Penerbit USM, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang at 10 am on 20 November 2008. For more information, please contact Izam Fairus Kamaruddin at [email protected]

Each year, Malaysia imports 2.5 million tonnes of paper to meet the demand of users. Only 10 % of the paper is recycled in a process which results in highly toxic effluents, which in turn pollutes the environment.

To deal with this problem, Prof. Darah Ibrahim will introduce her research on 'New Dimension in Paper Recycling Technology: Bioenzymatic Deinking'. This process uses waste from the sugar cane and palm oil industry to absorb the ink from the paper during the recycling process, thus eliminating the toxic effluent discharge.

This first of its kind technology enables 10 kilograms of waste paper to be recycled and sold at RM 72 (USD 20)

Inovasi USM: Hampas Tebu/Sawit Boleh Kitar Kertas
