S-Helmet: A Location-aware Safety System for Construction Workers

A summary by scientists at Hong Kong Polytechnic University about a newly developed system for construction site safety monitoring.

We have developed a system for construction safety, called S-Helmet, based on our real-time localization technique. S-Helmet can track workers’ real-time locations with desirable accuracy. When a worker is moving near danger zones, the helmet will automatically issue an alarm. The helmet can also be equipped with other sensors to monitor the worker’s health condition.

The S-Helmet can provide traces of works and moving objects. By mining the historical traces, we can analyze workers’ safety associated behavior and improve construction site safety management. S-Helmet can effectively help to avoid the construction site accidents and improve healthcare condition of workers. The system will have substantial impact on the construction safety.

Special features and advantages

• High accuracy: The localization error of S-Helmet is 1~2 meters
• High update frequency: The real-time location information can be
updated every second
• Ease of deployment: The system can be easily to be deployed on
the construction sites

Applications

• Construction site management: To help to improve the safety of
construction worker in construction site
• Coal-mine applications: To help to provide the real-time
localization of coal-mine workers
