On 10 July, to mark the grand finale of its JUPAS Summer Festival series, Lingnan University hosted a special screening of The Way We Talk—the critically acclaimed local production about the deaf and hard-of-hearing community—under the theme of "Society and Us". The film preceded a dialogue between Mr Adam Wong Sau-ping, producer, screenwriter, and director, and Ms Jacqueline Liu, producer, converging with Prof Lisa Leung Yuk-ming, Associate Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, and Prof Enoch Tam Yee-lok, Research Assistant Professor of the Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries, to explore the intersections of academic theory and creative narrative.
Designed to broaden social awareness in secondary school students and the general public, this strategic initiative also offered DSE candidates a welcome opportunity to unwind as they begin their university studies.
The panel, moderated by Professors Leung and Tam, engaged Mr Wong and Ms Liu in a thoughtful discussion that highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of liberal arts education.
The talk offered an in-depth exploration of marginalised lives, linguistic rights, and identity choices as portrayed on screen. Drawing upon their expertise in cultural studies and creative media, the panel considered how cinema can link individual self-discovery and social integration. This exchange prompted the audience to think about the complex, reciprocal relationship between the individual and society.
Lingnan University remains steadfastly committed to working closely with local secondary schools, and to leveraging its forward-looking liberal arts curriculum, integrating the arts and sciences to develop future-ready students equipped with critical thinking, a strong sense of social commitment, and empathy.
