Nor Datiakma, a post-graduduate student of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) who conducted the research for her Master’s degree, received these awards under the category of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The research unveils the potential of anti-MRSA agent derived from crude extract of Euphorbiaceae leaf, where the anti-MRSA activity is found to be comparable to Oxacillin-antibiotics used clinically for treatment of MRSA infection. The extract also demonstrates very low toxicity effect on mice.
The IRIIE 2010, themed “Enhancing Quality Research and Innovation for Societal Development” and held from 26 to 27 January 2010, aimed to provide opportunities for researchers to interact and exchange ideas, to exhibit the university’s research outputs, to promote research culture and to encourage collaborative research between kulliyahs, centres, institutes and industrial partners.
The event attracted the submission of 373 entries from the university’s various faculties under three broad categories, namely:
1. Science, Engineering & Technology;
2. Social Sciences & Humanities; and
3. Health & Allied Science.
Of 247 entries under the first category, 26 received Gold medals. For Social Sciences & Humanities, there were nine out of 91 which received Gold and for the last category, there were three out 35 participants.
