Lingnan University and Peking University co-organise the Lingnan-Yuanpei STEM Summer Academy Winning Teams to receive funding

Lingnan University and Yuanpei College of Peking University (PKU) organised the Lingnan-Yuanpei STEM Summer Academy (LYSSA) jointly for the third consecutive year. Coordinated by the Lingnan’s Office of Student Affairs, the LYSSA 2026 opening ceremony took place virtually on 20 April 2026, and attracted more than 40 experts, instructors, and students from both universities, providing a platform for Beijing-Hong Kong SAR youth to discuss innovation and entrepreneurship, improve their future competitiveness at work, and promote cultural exchanges and cooperation. The winning team will receive a cash prize of HK$50,000, as well as an incubation fund of up to HK$500,000 from the Lingnan Foundation, to support students in transforming their innovative ideas into entrepreneurial projects, products, or services with market potential.

The LYSSA 2026 opening ceremony is held virtually today.

LYSSA is hosted in the Hong Kong SAR and Beijing on alternate years, and LYSSA 2026 will take place over seven days from 2 to 8 July in Hong Kong on the Lingnan campus. Themes proposed by the universities refer to the recent tech innovation boom driven by the digital era, and topics include Intelligent Device and System for Real-Time Mosquito Monitoring; Darlink – an AI-powered communication and resource-matching platform; SenseShield – which promotes accessible feminine hygiene products for people with disabilities; AI Cognitive Training Devices for the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairments; and Fluency Auditor: A Multimodal AI-Driven Linguistic Assessment Platform covering AI, data science, social sciences, environment and ecology, language, and philosophy.

 

 

 

At the opening ceremony, Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing at Lingnan University, stressed that the programme has helped students from both universities transform their ideas into award-winning business plans. He hopes that this year’s cohort will build on that momentum and compete successfully for the incubation funds offered by Lingnan Foundation. He also thanked the PKU for hosting last year’s LYSSA.

 

 

 

Prof Li Meng, Dean of Yuanpei College atPeking University, said that he expects the insights and networks shared by experts and scholars from both universities will greatly benefit the students and help them to realise their visions and nurture their future businesses.

 

 

 

Prof Albert Ko Wing-yin from the Lingnan LYSSA Task Force and Director of the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative (LEI) at Lingnan University gave the first training lecture on“Making impact through social innovation and humanitarian technology”. He hopes that these projects will bring positive change to the community and uphold the Lingnan motto “Education for Service”.

 

 

 

LYSSA aims to serve as a cradle, cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship talents for the Hong Kong SAR and Beijing. Through cross-university collaboration, the programme seeks to strengthen students’ generalist qualities and entrepreneurial spirit and to reinforce integrated development, combining education, technology, and high-calibre talent, actively promoting the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.
