UNIST ranks fifth place among South Korea’s research universities, according to the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The 2018 rankings, released on the 5th of September, is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators, designed to capture the full range of universities actitivies. Those indicators cover teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.
The rankings also indicate that UNIST has been ranked between numbers 201-250 among the world’s top 1,012 research intensive universities. Besides, when measured based on the number of citations a university’s research obtains, UNIST has risen to South Korea’s top university. UNIST’s rise, according to THE, is due to a stronger citation impact and greater research influence.
In this year’s THE global rankings, UNIST obtained a total score of 51.6. UNIST’s highest score was in citations and industry income and demonstrated its strong research influence. As shown below, UNIST scored 22.9 points in teaching (the learning environment), 30.7 points in research (volume, income, and reputation), 95.9 points in citations (a value near 100), 66.0 points in industry income (knowledge transfer), and 47.9 in international outlook (staff, students, and research).
UNIST leads the future of science and technology by stragically supporting the development of its own fundamental technologies. Besides holding world-record efficiency of perovskite solar cells, UNIST has recently embarked on developing the world’s first seawater batteries. With its state-of-the-art UNIST Central Research Facilities (UCRF), UNIST aims to provide world’s best research environments for its students and faculty. This year’s strong result for UNIST in the THE rankings was helped by high scores in research inflence.
“UNIST’s strength in research, scholarship, teaching and international stature is reflected in this ranking,” says President Mooyoung Jung of UNIST. “We are delighted that UNIST has achieved such a high global ranking and it is thanks to all the hard work of our faculty, students, and staff.”
In this year’s rankings, the University of Oxford is ranked first in the world, followed by the University of Cambridge, California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
