For some journalists, being under the gun has nothing to do with a deadline.
The free flow of information is the lifeblood of democracy. Without press freedom, democratic development is an unattainable goal.
Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is organizing a Speaker Series that focuses on building democracy in developing countries.
Join us for a roundtable discussion with journalists from the developing world who have been up against apartheid, tyranny, censorship, corruption, and other enemies of democracy.
Hear women’s community radio station manager Humaira Habib from Afghanistan, investigative journalist Alejandra Matus (Chile), pioneering blogger Hossein ‘Hoder’ Derakhshan (Iran), and seasoned newspaper editor Mathatha Tsedu (South Africa) relate their personal experiences as part of a discussion on The Fourth Estate: The Media and Democratic Development.
Carleton University journalism professor Allan Thompson, editor of The Media and the Rwanda Genocide, will moderate the dialogue. French and English simultaneous interpretation will be available.
Be there Friday, November 2, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the 8th floor auditorium of IDRC’s new head office, 150 Kent Street (at Albert).
