Greeted by President Yuichiro Anzai, Vice President and Exhibition Committee Chairperson Taro Nishimura, Vice President Seiichi Mori and Ms. Tae Koizumi (second daughter of Shinzo Koizumi), Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress looked at the displays such as Shinzo Koizumi's literary remains, letters and personal belongings. Shinzo Koizumi was in charge of education of His Majesty the Emperor when he was the crown prince.
About the Exhibition of Shinzo Koizumi, in Commemoration of His 120th Anniversary of Birth (2008/5/8 - 5/21)
In celebration of Keio University's former President Shinzo Koizumi's 120th anniversary of birth, unpublished writings, letters that show his wide relationships and personal belongings are displayed to introduce his life. By looking back on the life of Shinzo Koizumi, we can trace Japan's history in an era of change, and this is very meaningful for today's society which is in a period of stagnation. More than 200 items are displayed, giving a message that what we need to realize in today's society of Japan is that "education" is to "nurture people".
About Shinzo Koizumi
Economist and educator Shinzo Koizumi was born in 1888 in Mita, Shiba-ku, Tokyo. He attended Keio from Keio Futsubu School, and showed outstanding performances in tennis. In 1910, he graduated from Keio University and started his teaching career at Keio. He studied in England and Germany from 1912 to 1916. After returning to Japan, he became Professor of Keio University and gave lectures on economics and social thought. From 1922 to 1932, he served as coach of the tennis team. From 1949 he was in charge of education of the crown prince (His Majesty the Emperor). He also made efforts in arranging the wedding of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. In 1959 he was presented the Order of Cultural Merit. He passed away in 1966. He has many publications, which include "Study on David Ricardo", "Paymaster Lieutenant of the Navy Department, Shinkichi Koizumi", "Discourse on Reading", "Yukichi Fukuzawa", and after his death, "Complete Works of Shinzo Koizumi" and "Biography of Shinzo Koizumi" have been compiled. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
