USM Winner of Prestige 2009

GEORGE TOWN – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) won the first prize at the Prestige 2009 Programme for its case study on the challenges in building a power station.

Prestige or Practical Environmental, Safety and Industrial Guidance for Engineers is an annual programme organized by Malaysian Gas Association (MGA). The 2-day programme was held at Hotel Hydro Majestic, Batu Ferringhi.

According to Jonathan Ng, the team leader for USM, they put forward the challenges they will have to face, especially in assessing the environmental effects before building the power station.

“We also have to provide alternatives for the community that is affected and at the same time maintain the sustainability of the environment at the location of the power station.

“Priority must also be given to corporate social responsibility programmes that would benefit the community,” he said.

As winners, USM received a cash prize of RM 5000, a book voucher worth RM 1000 and a trophy.

The team comprised 10 final-year students specialising in Chemical Engineering and 5 students specialising in Mineral Resources Engineering.

Apart from USM, final-year engineering students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL-MIMET) also participated in Prestige 2009.
