Six FRIM laboratories to seek accreditation

Six forest products testing laboratories at FRIM are pursuing MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through the Department of Standards (Standards Malaysia).

The adequacy audit process has been initiated this month, with the Wood Engineering Laboratory and Wood Drying Laboratory assessed on 19 October and the Furniture Testing Laboratory and Wood Lamination Laboratory, 20 October.

The Wood Finishing Laboratory and Wood Decay Laboratory are scheduled to undergo the same process on 3 November, after which pre-assessment will be carried out on all the laboratories and expected to be completed in November.

Following this, the laboratories will be subject to compliance audit by February 2009. ISO/IEC 17025 is an international standard used for evaluating laboratories throughout the world, first introduced 1999.

The accreditation under MS ISO/IEC 17025 confirms that a laboratory is implementing the management system for quality, administrative and technical operations. The standard also addresses a laboratory’s ability to provide precise and accurate test data and results.

Apart from that, the Fire Protection Laboratory will also undergo periodic surveillance by Standards Malaysia on 28 October.
