UPM to Restructure Bachelor of Consumer Studies

SERDANG, 18 January – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has restructured the program module for Bachelor of Consumer Studies (BPG) as offered by the Faculty of Human Ecology (FEM) for the purpose of enhancing the its quality.

Vice Chancellor of UPM, Prof. Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said the course offers three minor subjects; Consumer Finance, Consumer Advocate and Education, Consumers and Consumer Products.

“The restructuring has fulfilled the requirement from National Education Higher Council (MPTN) and Department of Education Management (JPIPT) where the allocation stipulated, 47% curriculum is made of concept and theory, 15% humanity and 38% on skills,” he said during the signing of memorandum of agreement (MoU) between UPM and the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM).

The discourse outcome between FEM and FPAM affirmed that Consumer Studies Programme with Consumer Finance as a minor meets the requirement of Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

“Four modules out of seven offered by FPAM are included in BPG curriculum,” he added.

FPAM President, Wong Boon Choy said the agreement shall foster closer alliance in term of teaching and learning including knowledge sharing of the said industry.

“CFP certification will boost the number of CFP holder in the country and allows collaboration opportunities that will give impact on the reinforcement of financial planning in Malaysia and the region,” he said.

At present, UPM is gearing up the sharing of knowledge, expertise, physical assets, and particularly UPM’s pool of experts that could benefit the community.

Also seen in attendance were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris and the Dean Faculty of Human Ecology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laily Paim.
