IDRC starts new work in ASEAN

On August 4, as part of her participation in a meeting of Trade Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, announced a new project to be funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

The project, titled, Turning Value Chains into Social Gains in Southeast Asia, will identify how participation in production value chains can promote employment and better working conditions. It will focus on the garment, electronics, and agricultural sectors in Southeast Asia, which employ large numbers of low-skilled workers, particularly women.

The project will involve collaborative research on value chains, as well as a learning forum for practitioners, producers, and emerging leaders. The identified organizations undertaking this will be the JustJobs Network Inc., the Grow Asia Partnership Ltd., the National University of Singapore, and University of British Columbia.

This is a 40 month project, to run from the summer of 2016 until the fall of 2019, with a budget of $1.7 million. IDRC began funding research in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries in 1971, one year after the Centre’s creation. To date, it has supported 1179 projects in the ASEAN region, with investments totaling CA$187 million.
