SERDANG, 5th Dec – Prof. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently received ‘MASS Young Researcher Awards 2008’ as awarded by The Malaysian Solid State Science and Technology Society.
The award is in conjunction with the 24th Regional Conference Solid State Science and Technology held at Tiara Beach Resort Port Dickson on December 1st 2008.
Prof. Taufiq informed the media that the awards are given to researchers who conducted studies on solid state science and technology.
”My research focuses on the usage vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) as a catalyst for light oxidation hydrocarbon reaction to produce high value added petrochemical product.
”The catalyst has been developed successfully and modified with the addition of several dopants to obtain higher catalytic activity and selectivity, he explained.
He is also the Coordinator of Science & Catalysis Technology Centre of Excellence at the Faculty of Science, UPM who has documented 2 patents for catalyst formation technology.
He also elaborated on the method being used to reduce the organic solvent and waste material, and apart from that he successfully developed a technology to prepare the catalyst in nanoparticle size which significantly improved the performance of the catalyst.
In addition, he is working on photodegradation of toxic waste by using titanium oxide and also produces activated carbon from agricultural waste.
Prof. Taufiq brought home cash prize of RM1000 and a certificate of achievement presented by the Exco Member of Negeri Sembilan, Tuan Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli who is also the Chairman of Learning and Higher Education Action Committee.
