USM wins 7 gold, 11 silver and 6 bronze medals at ITEX 2010

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) grabbed seven Gold, 11 Silver and six Bronze medals at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2010 that was held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The victory was even sweeter as two of the seven research products that won the Gold received the special award for Best Innovation, including the product, Vibration Absorber For Electric Grass Trimmer, an invention by the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, USM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaidi Mohd. Ripin.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaidi received two special awards, that is, the Best Invention, ITEX 2010 as well as the international IENA Award for Best Invention, Germany.

The Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering, Professor Abdul Latif Ahmad enjoyed a double victory for his invention, that is, L-HPA: Cardio Drug Precursor which also received a special award from Taipie International Invention Show & Technomart.

USM was also honoured with a Silver medal for Best Exhibition Booth, ITEX 2010 which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 14-16 May.

Overall USM obtained 99 percent on medal tally, where out of 25 entries, 24 of them caught the attention of the jury and were awarded medals.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Profesor Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said that this victory clearly shows that USM is always committed in developing the latest research and innovation that can benefit society in general.

He added that USM will always focus on studies that will meet the needs of the bottom billions and look at sustainability issues as the core of each invention and innovation that is introduced.

“Winning 24 medals for the 25 products exhibited is an amazing achievement and USM will continue to ensure that the innovations and inventions of institutions of higher learning are able to compete, especially at international level,” he explained at the press conference in USM today.

ITEX 2010, organized by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) was launched by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili. Also present was the President of MINDS, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Augustine Ong.

An annual event, ITEX is a platform for universities, research institutions, investors, corporations and others to showcase their products and seek business opportunities for their respective inventions and innovations.

First introduced in 1989, ITEX became well-known throughout the world and successfully showcased more than 600 inventions, both local and international. The participating countries include Iran, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Taiwan and others.
