USM contributes computers to the community

PENANG, 9 July – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) with the collaboration of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Centre for Knowledge, Communication and Technology, Engineering Campus contributed almost 110 used computers to several selected schools under the Lestari Siswa Project introduced by USM.

According to the Campus Director, Prof. Abd. Aziz Tajuddin, four schools were shortlisted to receive the aid.

These schools included Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Nibong, Nibong Tebal, which received 30 computers, SMK Taman Jelutong, Kulim, Kedah (5), SK Methodist, Parit Buntar (30), Sekolah Rendah An Najah, Taman Pekaka (30) and a mini Library to be set up in Kuala Gula under the Lestari Siswa Project (15).

“I hope that with the aid provided by projects such as this, it will benefit the segment of society that is lacks knowledge in the field of computers, especially our youth,” he explained.

He added that this is the second time a project like this has been undertaken. This first time was when USM contributed nearly 30 computers to a tuition centre run by a USM alumni, Tuan Haji Ramli in Bedong, Kedah.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (PPKEE), Prof. Mohd. Zaid Abdullah, said that PPKEE was prepared to provide technical assistance to the schools that received this aid.

”The School has no problems in contributing energy and expertise in terms of setting up the computer system that uses the Pentium 4 software, download information from the Internet and advise the school students,” he said.

The Deputy Managing Chairman of Sekolah Rendah Agama An Najah, Prof. Madya Dr. Soib Taib, who is also a lecturer with PPKEE, expressed his gratitude to USM for the help given to the religious school which had been operating for eight years without any computer facilities.

”With the help of the computers, our teachers will be able to provide additional and new information to the 172 students who until now have been learning through the chalk and board method only. Meanwhile, the school will also provide opportunities to the local community around Taman Pekaka to make use of these facilities,” he added.
