Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon delivered a special speech entitled "Peace and Disarmament" on Aug. 4 at International Conference Center in Waseda University.
In the welcoming address prior to his speech, President Katsuhiko Shirai introduced two of our alumni, Kan'ichi Asakawa and Chiune Sugihara, both of whom have made great contribution to peace and protection of international human rights. He also expressed his hope for students to pursue global and humanitarian activities for peacekeeping, disarmament, and respect for human rights.
In his speech entitled "Peace and Disarmament", the Secretary-General referred to his aspiration to keep the memory of the tragedies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki alive, and his expectation for the young generation to realize a nuclear-weapon-free world. He also urged students to become leaders who will think of the world as well as Japan to resolve the global issues.
The participating students were keenly interested in raising many questions on the efforts by the United Nations, such as peacekeeping operations, small arms control, and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Among those questions was how universities and other educational institutions could take part in peace and disarmament efforts.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon continued his dialogue with the students beyond the time allotted for the event. The audience of 450 people that had filled the auditorium erupted in applause as he left the auditorium.
Prior to the speech, the Secretary-General participated in a meeting to exchange opinions on Academic Impact, a global initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in various areas including human rights, educational opportunity, sustainability and conflict resolution.
