ASEAN Secretary General Opens the ASEAN Energy Symposium at PSU

Prince of Songkla University joined hands with the Economics Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), and the Center for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) in organizing the Symposium on Energy Saving and Biofuel Utilization.

The purpose of the symposium was to provide opportunities for academics and businessmen dealing with energy in ASEAN and East Asia, especially Japan to exchange views and to develop a body of knowledge on energy saving and utilization. One hundred participants who were experts in the field were from related agencies in Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

This Symposium was held during September 1-2, 2010 at the 60th Anniversary of the King’s Accession to the Throne Convention Center, Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai Campus. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, the ASEAN Secretary General, together with Japan First Ambassador to Thailand and the ERIA administrative board, presided over the opening ceremony on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Assoc. Prof. Boonsom Siribumrungsukha delivered the welcoming speech.

Interesting topics included lectures on: Policies on Biofuel of Producer and Consumer Countries at both Regional and Global levels, Potential of ASEAN Countries in Biofuel Production, Energy-saving and Roles of Biofuel in East Asia, Cooperation in the Search for Sustainable Use of Biomass in East Asia and small group discussions on biomass and biodiesel, etc.
