Recycling Awareness Week: a step towards a greener campus

In an effort to ensure a culture of recycling for a greener campus, the Department of Biology at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised Recyling Awareness Week in collaboration with Coca-Cola Malaysia.

Head of Department of Biological Sciences, prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail said the activity could inspire UPM campus, especially students, to generate income and keep the campus green.

"Members of the UPM campus, especially students, can generate income through club activities with the proceeds of selling empty bottles to be recycled," he said.

Assistant Scientific Officer of UPM, Razak Harun, said such campaigns should be conducted regularly to keep the spirit of waste recycling among UPM staff and students.

"Indirectly, the message fosters the spirit of recycling waste materials," he said while reclysling over 20 empty bottles.

Second semester student of Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Afiqah Bakri said the campaign aimed to train students in soft skills when searching for and collecting empty bottles that can be recycled.

"These activities need to diversify into other waste products that can be recycled," he said.

The program ran from 26 to 30 March and involved staff and students of UPM.

Coca Cola Malaysia offered an extra incentive: the campus will receive a bottle of Coca-Cola drinks 500ml fore each five empty bottles recycled, a bag of brand Coca-Cola with every 10 empty drink bottles and a t-shirt with the Coca-Cola for every 20 empty drink bottles.
