Media advisory - The Irago Conference (15 - 16 November 2012)

Tahara, Aichi, Japan, 12 Nov - Global developments in materials science, robotics, computing, earthquake prediction and electric vehicles are just some of the other topics due to be presented by pre-eminent researchers at the Irago Conference. The conference will be streamed live on USTREAM for anyone who cannot attend.

The Irago Conference, 15 - 16 November 2012
Irago Sea-Park & Spa Hotel, Tahara, Aichi, Japan

Organised by the Electronics-Inspired Interdisciplinary Research Institute (EIIRIS) at Toyohashi University of Technology, The Irago Conference aims to enhance mutual understanding between scientists, engineers, policy makers, and experts from a wide spectrum of pure and applied sciences in order to resolve major global issues.

Top experts from an array of research backgrounds will gather to debate on topics ranging from energy and natural resources to public health and disaster prevention.

Seiichi Takenoshita will examine the challenges Fukushima Medical University has faced since 11 March 2011 not only in terms of treating those exposed to radiation and their long-term health management, but also in communicating the facts and lessons learned to future generations. Other speakers, including Yasuaki Kohama, Mark Kawamoto Uracha Ruktanonchai and Su Sakata who consider a range of technological challenges to energy production on an ever energy hungry planet. Will microbes help us produce natural gas in the future? To what extent will ‘smart’ houses and cars insure safe, optimal energy usage in homes and business? And what is the ideal fuel anyway? Are just some of the questions that they will aim to answer.

From industry to computing and transport to medicine, all these fields are benefitting from the rapid developments in a field broadly known as ‘nanotechnology’. Daniel Chua describes the multifunctional uses of carbon nanotubes for example. Their size, structural integrity, high electrical and thermal conductivity, not to mention chemical stability makes them very attractive in applications ranging from transistors to biomedical materials.

Global developments in materials science, robotics, computing, earthquake prediction and electric vehicles are just some of the other topics due to be presented by pre-eminent researchers at the Irago Conference.

“This is a unique conference combining thought provoking insights into global issues such as energy, disaster mitigation, and nanotechnology by internationally renowned invited speakers with selected talks, posters, and demonstrations from academics, industrialists, and think tanks,” says Professor Adarsh Sandhu, Program Chairman. “The conference is truly a ‘360 degree outlook on critical scientific and technological challenges’ ahead of us.”

Graduate students sessions and excursions to the Toyohashi Tech laboratories, a megasolar plant and among other events should provide plenty of stimulus for all those taking part.
