The School of Graduate Studies (GS) of Lingnan University hosts the “Empower Your Future: Lingnan Postgraduate Orientation 2026”.
The new postgraduates come from over 20 countries and regions worldwide, including the Hong Kong SAR, the Chinese Mainland, Bangladesh, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Türkiye, the UK, the US, and Vietnam.
The orientation was officiated by members of Lingnan’s senior management, including Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing at Lingnan University; Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning; and Prof Sam Kwong Tak-wu, Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research), J.K. Lee Chair Professor of Computational Intelligence and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, as well as deans of other faculties and schools.
Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu welcomed the new postgraduates to Lingnan, saying “Postgraduate students are a vital force in driving knowledge innovation and scientific research. Lingnan aims to become a leading research-intensive liberal arts university comprehensive in arts and sciences in the digital era. We are committed to creating more opportunities for postgraduates to engage in research and interdisciplinary collaboration, and enabling students to work closely with professors and co-author academic papers to address real-world challenges, while upholding Lingnan’s motto of ‘Education for Service’.”
Prof Xin Yao shared his academic journey in his speech. He emphasised that only by choosing research topics that truly align with one’s interests and passion can students sustain motivation and inspiration and discover the meaning of research in everyday life. He encouraged students to explore new knowledge with an open mind, engage actively in their studies, and make their postgraduate journey a path of continuous growth and enlightenment.
Prof Sam Kwong Tak-wu pointed out that Lingnan’s international influence and research capabilities continue to increase. He encouraged incoming students to broaden their horizons by taking full advantage of the University’s diverse learning resources, which include academic guidance, involvement in research projects, and opportunities to participate in international invention exhibitions.
In the new academic year, a record number of six outstanding PhD students from the Chinese Mainland, France, Russia, the US and Bangladesh have been recognised by the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Lingnan also held a “Welcome Gathering for Research Postgraduate Students” for the first time, hosted by Prof Xin Yao. The session was to help postgraduates gain a deeper understanding of Lingnan’s research environment, supporting resources, and development opportunities, enabling incoming students to adapt and integrate more quickly into the research community and foster closer academic connections with professors and researchers.
Lingnan has introduced three new taught postgraduate programmes for the 2026/27 academic year, spanning business, data science, interdisciplinary studies, and social sciences. Details are as follows:
- Department of Sociology and Social Policy - Master of Social Sciences in Sociology and Data Analytics: Combines sociological reasoning with computational analytics techniques to cultivate talent able to use data to address social issues.

- School of Data Science - Master of Science in Innovative Design and Artificial Intelligence: Focuses on generative AI and innovative product design applications to promote the development of creative industries.

- Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies - Doctor of Smart Manufacturing: Integrates cutting-edge technologies across disciplines, the programme welcomes applicants with relevant academic backgrounds or professional experience and cultivates smart manufacturing leaders who can drive industrial innovation and transformation.

Lingnan University held a campus carnival with four main themes on Postgraduate Orientation Day: “Empower Your Wellbeing & Support”, “Discover Your Academic Learning”, “Enrich Your Connections & Alumni”, and “Explore Your Innovation & Culture”. A “Safe & Smart @ Lingnan” zone was also set up, where representatives from the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and the Hong Kong Police Force gave new students anti-corruption and anti-scam information and advice.
