□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that it held a ceremony marking its 22nd anniversary on the morning of the 3rd at the Convention Hall in the main administration building. The ceremony celebrated the institution’s growth and development while reaffirming its commitment to a new era of advancement.
□ The ceremony was held to recognize the dedication of members of the DGIST community who have contributed to the institution’s remarkable growth since its establishment in 2004 and to reaffirm DGIST’s commitment to becoming a global innovation university that leads the future of science and technology, building on the achievements it has accumulated over the past 22 years.
□ The event was attended by President Kunwoo Lee, senior university officials, faculty and staff members, and students. The ceremony included the presentation of commemorative plaques to employees who have dedicated 20 or 10 years to DGIST’s development, as well as 22nd anniversary awards to faculty, staff, and students who have enhanced the institution’s reputation through outstanding achievements in education, research, administration, and other areas.
□ In particular, Professor Hyuk-Jun Kwon of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the “DGIST Person of the Year Award,” which recognizes a member of the DGIST community who has made an outstanding contribution to the institution’s development. As Chair of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering, a contract-based department established in partnership with Samsung Electronics, Professor Kwon led the successful establishment of the degree program, including the development of its academic system and curriculum. He has also produced outstanding research achievements in next-generation electronic devices and semiconductor processes, including 75 SCIE-indexed publications. In addition, he was recognized for his contributions to the commercialization of research outcomes and to strengthening DGIST’s competitiveness through active industry-academia collaboration with domestic and international companies, including Lam Research in the United States, Samsung Electronics, and SEMES. He also led the establishment of NeuroSense Co., Ltd., a DGIST tech-in-kind spin-off company, through an the contribution of technology as in-kind capital.
□ Professors Youngwook Kim of the Department of Physics and Chemistry, Gain Kim of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Jiwoong Yang of the Department of Energy Science & Engineering, and Bong Hoon Kim of the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering were appointed as Distinguished Professors. DGIST plans to continue strengthening its core capabilities and advancing world-class research by recognizing and supporting researchers who have achieved outstanding research results.
□ “The history of a university is ultimately the history of its people. It is our members who have made DGIST the outstanding institution it is today, and they will play the leading role in building an even stronger DGIST in the future,” said DGIST President Kunwoo Lee in his commemorative address. “We will boldly embrace challenges and seek answers so that DGIST can become a university that is indispensable to the nation and the local community, as well as a top-tier university that attracts global attention and is the first choice for collaboration among institutions around the world.”
□ Meanwhile, as it marks its 22nd anniversary, DGIST plans to expand its strong research, education, and entrepreneurship capabilities, rooted in the region, onto the global stage and significantly broaden strategic collaboration with leading universities and research institutions in Korea and abroad, as well as with global companies. Through these efforts, DGIST aims to move beyond its role as a leading innovation hub representing the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and make a bold leap forward as a global innovation university that helps shape the future of humanity.
