“Don’t just learn AI, use it for scientific research”: DGIST opens admissions for 2027 AI/SW SCHOOL

- 10 courses in mathematics, science, and AI for fifth-grade elementary through second-year middle school students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk; applications open October 19 - “Working closely with DGIST faculty”: Comprehensive support ranging from hands-on laboratory experiences to career mentoring

□ The DGIST Convergence Gifted Academy at DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that it will recruit approximately 85 students for the 2027 academic year for the “DGIST AI/SW SCHOOL,” targeting fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school students and first- and second-year middle school students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. A total of 10 courses will be offered, including 6 mathematics and science convergence courses and 4 AI courses. Applications will be accepted from 10:00 a.m. on October 19 to 6:00 p.m. on November 20, and application fees will be fully waived.

□ The DGIST AI/SW SCHOOL aims to go beyond simply teaching AI as a subject by enabling students to directly use AI as a tool for data analysis, simulation, and modeling in mathematics and science inquiry, allowing them to independently investigate and solve real-world problems. In particular, the curriculum incorporates DGIST’s research strengths in fields such as biotechnology, brain science, physics, and robotics at a level appropriate for students, providing learning experiences connected to the research settings of a science and technology institute.

□ Each course consists of approximately 10 students, guided by 1 DGIST faculty advisor, 1 or 2 instructors—including faculty with experience in gifted education and doctoral-level researchers—and 1 teaching assistant. The curriculum does not require prior study of subjects taught at higher school levels and centers on problem-based learning, project-based learning, experiments, and hands-on activities, enabling students to develop inquiry skills by formulating their own questions and finding solutions.

□ In addition to the regular curriculum, a camp comprising approximately 20 class hours per year will be held at the DGIST campus, offering a variety of programs including laboratory experiences, researcher mentoring, and presentations of project outcomes. All courses include AI ethics education and reading education, while enrolled students are also offered special programs such as academic and career counseling, career mentoring by DGIST undergraduate and graduate students, and “A Night of Counting Stars,” in which students and their families participate together.

□ DGIST is working to establish a gifted education institute under the Gifted Education Promotion Act to further develop the AI/SW SCHOOL into a systematic gifted education institution. The relevant approval process is currently underway, and once approved, it will operate as the “DGIST-affiliated AX Gifted Education Institute designated by the Ministry of Science and ICT.” Building on its experience operating the Science Creativity School and AI/SW SCHOOL, DGIST plans to continue expanding gifted education in science and AI in the region.

□ “We designed the curriculum to give students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk the opportunity to use artificial intelligence as a tool to investigate and solve real-world problems at a science and technology institute equipped with advanced science and technology infrastructure,” said Changwon Seok, Director of the DGIST Convergence Gifted Academy. “We encourage students with potential and a strong desire to explore mathematics, science, and AI to take an active interest and apply.”

□ Meanwhile, two admissions information sessions for the 2027 academic year will be held: at 7:00 p.m. on October 14 in the International Conference Room of DGIST Research Administration Building (R1), and at 11:00 a.m. on October 17 in the main auditorium of the Daegu Scale-up Hub (DASH).
