Liquid Metal Dealloying Creates Nanoporous Silicon Carbide at Just 800°C

Researchers discovered that using liquid metal dealloying can help produce a special silicon carbide at a markedly lower temperature than conventional methods, while still allowing for control of its structure at the nanometer scale.

Schematic overview of the low-temperature synthesis and structural evolution of nanoporous β-SiC by liquid metal dealloying. Selective removal of Mn from the layered Mn5SiC precursor in molten Bi leads to a three-dimensional network of interconnected β-SiC nanoplates at 800°C. First-principles calculations support the energetic feasibility of the structural rearrangement. ©Xiao Bian, Tohoku University
