USM Postgraduate student sole IPT representative in aid mission to Gaza

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today created history in championing human rights at international level when a USM student was selected to participate in the programme ‘Misi Konvoi Ramadhan Gaza, Palestine : Ramadhan March For Freedom’.

Prof.Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abd. Razak, USM Vice-Chancellor, said that Muhd. Nurhadi Hamsar, 25, a postgraduate student pursuing his studies in the field of Pharmacology at USM was the sole representative of the IPTs in Malaysia to join the mission jointly organized by MAPIM (The Malaysian Islamic Organisations’ Consultative Council) and the Secretariat of the Asian Gathering of Muslim Ulama’ (SHURA).

More than 300 activists from all over the world will be joining the humanitarian aid mission from 8- 18 August 2010 which will be carrying aid through a land route to the border at Rafah in Egypt.

“It is a great honour not only for the student but also USM because as we know, it is not easy to be part of a humanitarian mission such as this.

Nurhadi, when met said that the month of Ramadhan was picked for the start of the mission because it was seen as a holy month and extremely meaningful to Muslims. In addition, it is hoped that the mission will receive blessings from the Almighty and that the sufferings of the Palestinians will end soon.

“We hope that the Egyptian government will keep the border open at Rafah so that aid can be channeled to the people of Gaza. Apart from us, there are others in the mission, including several NGOs who have similar aspirations.

“It is an initiative by Malaysians and Mapin to illustrate the efforts of all Malaysians as well as the rest of the world to free Gaza and also to pressure Israel and Egypt to comply with international calls to end the illegal siege in Gaza,” said Nurhadi, who hails from Sabah.

Prior to this, Prof.Tan Sri Dato’Dzulkifli also officiated at the Pre-launch of ConvEx 2010 organised by the USM Student Representative Council.

ConvEx 2010 will be held at the same time as the 42nd Convocation Ceremony from 4-8 August 2010 and the Chancellor of USM, D.Y.M.M. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail is expected to officiate at the launch.

According to the Director of ConvEx 2010, Sivaneswari Muniandy, the Pre-ConvEx Programme will involve promotion sessions to be held in several popular spots, including shopping complexes like Queensbay Mall, Bukit Jambul Complexs, Megamall, Sunway Carnival and others.

“Besides providing an opportunity to try out some of the students’ creative ideas, ConvEX will also help to train students in managing and organising a huge event at university level. This is very important in preparing the students to face the real world in the future.
