New poverty index stirs wide interest

The IDRC-supported Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative launched a new tool last month that provides new ways of understanding poverty around the world.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the results of its first analysis have been featured in major publications, including The New York Times, The Economist, The Guardian, and Le Devoir.

The MPI tries to give a more accurate picture of acute poverty than traditional “dollar-a-day” measures by considering indicators of health, education, and standard of living, in addition to income. The index will be featured in the 20th anniversary edition of the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report, to be released in November.

Measures of multidimensional poverty have been used by national governments, including Mexico and Bhutan, and are being considered by Chile and Colombia.
