The Hon Andrew Yao Cho-fai, Council Chairman of Lingnan University, conferred honorary doctoral degrees on six distinguished individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements and valuable contributions to humanity.

This lecture examines how Philippine Sinophone poet Grace Hsieh-Hsing (1938–2021) developed “tidal poetics” to describe her transformation of the Philippine archipelago’s geographic reality into a metaphor for artistic creation and cultural identity. Through depictions of Philippine foodways, customs, and landscapes, Hsieh crafted a poetics both locally rooted and transnationally connected, using “archipelagic joy” to respond to the political rupture following the Taiwan–Philippines diplomatic break.

I bring over 10 years of teaching and research experience at the university, college, and intermediate levels, with a strong focus on academic excellence and student development. In addition to my teaching roles, I have contributed to the scholarly community as a reviewer for the Horizon Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Research (ISSN: 2682-9096), a respected international peer-reviewed and open-access journal (https://horizon-jhssr.com/).

University professor with 20+ years of experience in higher education sectors in Thailand, Philippines, and Cambodia.
Professor Beena Giridharan is the Dean for Learning and Teaching at Curtin Malaysia, and provides academic leadership to Curtin Malaysia, with a particular focus on academic operational efficiency. Her research and academic interests include: vocabulary acquisition in ESL, educational administration and leadership; higher education practices, transnational education (TNE), ethno-linguistic studies in indigenous communities, and social and cultural studies. As a member of an OLT (Office of Learning and Teaching, Australia) funded project entitled ‘Learning without Borders’ she has investigated leadership roles in Trans-National Education (TNE) and internationalization of the curriculum.
