The ceremony was officiated by Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, who expressed delight at welcoming an international-level scientist to the Lingnan University, saying “Prof Tyrtyshnikov serves on the editorial boards of a number of top international academic journals, and has great influence in the mathematics research community worldwide. Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he currently serves as a faculty member, is widely regarded as a top Russian university and ranked among the world’s top hundred universities. We warmly welcome Prof Tyrtyshnikov as a member of the Lingnan community. His presence will provide valuable opportunities for academic exchanges with world-class scholars, inspire interdisciplinary innovation, and further expand Lingnan’s collaboration with the international mathematics community and other leading institutions.”
Prof Tyrtyshnikov currently serves as Professor and Chairman at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and key positions he has held include Director of the Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has received numerous international accolades, including “Best Teacher of the Year” at Lomonosov Moscow State University (2014), the Gold Medal “For Great Contributions in Mathematics” from the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics (2019), the Sber Scientific “Digital Universe” Prize (2023), and the prestigious Yangtze Professorship at Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU, Shenzhen).
He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, was Associate Editor of Linear Algebra and Its Applications (2000-2023), and is on the editorial board of many top international journals. Prof Tyrtyshnikov’s achievements encompass mathematics and computational methods, particularly for handling large and complex datasets. He has developed advanced algorithms for data compression, such as low-rank approximations and tensor-based methods, significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of complex data computations. These contributions have broad applications in scientific computing and artificial intelligence, and have influenced the development of advanced data analysis models.
Following the conferment, Prof Tyrtyshnikov gave a most interesting lecture, “Theory and Applications of Tensor Decompositions”, describing the advanced mathematical method used to analyse and simplify complex datasets, and its growing importance in modern data analysis models. He also explained how different mathematical techniques can help solve complex data challenges, improving efficiency and accuracy in data analysis, scientific computing, and artificial intelligence, while also focusing on unresolved mathematical problems that continue to challenge researchers.
