Keio University to host APRU Doctoral Students Conference for the first time in Japan
---Young researchers of Pacific Rim universities with bright futures gather in Japan---

Keio University is the first university as a modern comprehensive educational institution in Japan to
celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2008, and a series of commemorative projects have been launched
and will continue on for 10 years. As one of these projects, Keio University will host the Doctoral
Students Conference, one of the main events of APRU* (Association of Pacific Rim Universities) at its Mita
campus.

At this international conference, doctoral students of member universities with different cultural
backgrounds and diverse disciplines will all present papers and participate in discussions. In addition,
Prof. Heizo Takenaka, Prof. Jun Murai, and Dr. Junichi Ujiie, Chairman of Nomura Holdings, will deliver
keynote speeches, and a workshop to better understand the Japanese culture and society will be held.

All programs will be held in English. With increasing globalization of education and research, it has
become more important to build up a network of connections at the doctoral stage. This is a perfect
opportunity for young researchers to promote academic exchange, experience organizing an
international conference, and to make valuable contacts with other researchers across the border.
Expectations are high for the 8th Doctoral Students Conference as it is the first to be held in Japan. A
total of 108 students from 26 universities of 15 economies plan to participate.
