USM scores 100% success at SIIF 2010

A research team from Universiti Sains Malaysia recorded a 100% success by winning 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at the Seoul International Invention Fair 2010.

PENANG, 9 DEC: A research team from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) brought honour and glory to the nation when they recorded a 100% success by winning 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at the Seoul International Invention Fair 2010 (SIIF) held from 2-5 December 2010 at the Pacific Hall, Coex, Seoul, Korea recently.

The three gold medals were won by Prof. Hanafi Ismail from the School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering, USM for the research product EnviroPLAST - A Green and Degradable Plastic’; Dr. Sam’an Malik Masudi from the School of Dental Sciences for his research product ‘Nano Hybrid Endodontic Sealer (NanoSeal Plus)'; and Dr. Ahmed Mansour Mohammed Manasrah from the National Advanced IPv6 Centre for the product ‘An Intelligent Network Monitoring and Anomaly Detection Engine’.

The Silver medal went to Dr. Wan Rosli Wan Ishak from the School of Health Sciences, for the research product ‘Cornsilk Powder: An Alternative Healthy Food Ingredient’.
Dr. Shahrom Mahmud, from the School of Physics and Assoc. Prof. Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya from the Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia won the bronze medals for their respective research products, that is, ‘High Performance Varistors’ and 'Persuasive Multimedia Learning Environment (PMLE)'.
A total of 650 participants from 31 countries exhibited their research products at the SIIF 2010.
While elaborating on USM’s success, Prof. Zainul Fadziruddin Zainuddin, the Head of the USM Delegation as well as the Director of Innovation, USM said that USM’s achievement was very much better this year although they only sent 6 research products compared to 2008, when they exhibited 13 research products.
"From studies and observation, we have found that SIIF leans towards the development of research products that are oriented towards consumerism. This was a key consideration in the selection of products and research to be sent to the exhibition in Korea.
"This strategy was proven to be effective and this time, 50% of the total number of products exhibited by USM grabbed the Gold medal," he said.
With reference to planning for the future, Prof. Zainul urged USM researchers to focus on the development of products or research that have practical applications or which are consumerism-oriented.
This is important not only for participation in competitions of this sort, but also to facilitate networking between researchers and the industry so that society ultimately benefits from this partnership," he said.
