UPM is the only institution of higher learning in Asia to successfully position itself among the world's top 10 universities based on the university's excellence in promoting sustainability through environmental conservation and green technology.
The rating takes into account the commitment demonstrated by UPM to ensure sustainability and its lush green environment, the size and area of green infrastructure and the efficiency of energy usage on campus.
In addition, it also takes into account the adoption of green technology, policy enforcement and the supervision of transportation and sustainable waste management on campus.
University of California, Berkeley topped the first position, followed by University of Nottingham, United Kingdom in second place, York University, Canada in third place while the host, the University of Indonesia was ranked 15.
Among the green initiatives undertaken by UPM is an annual mega programs like tree planting activities in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation and Recycling Rally, a program to promote recycling among the campus community.
The GreenMetric committee of UPM is a joint venture involving the Office of Marketing and Communications, the Corporate Planning Division; supported by the InfoComm Development Center (iDEC) Faculty of Environmental Studies, Faculty of Forestry and the Office Development and Asset Management.
