Prized for her passion- Dr.Chan Yoke Fun, 2015 L’Oréal-UNESCO International Rising Talent

Dr Chan Yoke Fun, from Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya has been selected as one of the 15 L’Oréal-UNESCO 2015 For Women in Science International Rising Talents.

Dr Chan Yoke Fun, from Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya has been selected as one of the 15 L’Oréal-UNESCO 2015 For Women in Science International Rising Talents.

The Awards Ceremony took place on 18 March 2015 at the Grand Amphitheatre of the Sorbonne University (Paris). Five women scientists were awarded in physical sciences and 15 UNESCO-L'OREAL International Rising Talents. The Awards promote scientific excellence and the contribution of women to science, in particular in Life Sciences and the Physical Sciences.

The 2015 International Rising Talents Selection Committee is composed of 12 highly regarded scientists from Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Poland and Russia. Dr. Chan was chosen from among the winners of the 236 fellowships awarded locally by L’Oréal subsidiaries and UNESCO around the world. Her research focuses on enterovirus A71, a virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease in children. An emerging global problem, the virus is rapidly evolving and recent outbreaks were also associated with brain infection which can be fatal.

Dr.Chan hopes that this award will serve as an encouragement to all female scientists. We can be world-class scientists, lovely wives and wonderful mums, all at once.
