Professor Harald Rose among three 2015 NIMS Award winners

Contributions to the development and popularization of the aberration corrector for electron microscopes recognized.

PRESS RELEASE: National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)

The following three researchers are winners of the 2015 NIMS Award.

Award winners:

Professor Harald Rose (University of Ulm)
Professor Maximilian Haider (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)
Professor Knut Wolf Urban (Research Centre Juelich)

Reason for winning:

Theoretical study, development and popularization of the aberration corrector for electron microscopes, and their application to materials science.

The three researchers including Professor Rose developed a device that corrects aberrations in electron microscopy (blur and distortion), which for the first time allowed for clear observation of interfaces and defects. The device also enabled accurate identification of atomic positions and consequently studies on the relationships between the properties of materials and atomic arrangement. The selection committee highly regarded the fact that these events later significantly contributed to the advancement of materials research. The award ceremony and award winners’ lectures will be held during the NIMS Conference that takes place at the Tsukuba International Congress Center (Epochal Tsukuba) for three days from July 14 (Tuesday) through 16 (Thursday).

NIMS Award:

During the NIMS Conference that is held every July, a NIMS Award is presented to a researcher who has made an outstanding accomplishment in materials science and technology. In line with the theme of the conference, award recipient candidates are nominated from top scientists around the world, and the selection committee consisting of unbiased experts determines a winner through careful consideration.

NIMS Conference:

Inviting world-leading researchers, we host an international meeting called the NIMS Conference in which participants engage in discussion on various issues related to materials science, nanotechnology, environment and energy, and they present their latest study results. The 12th NIMS Conference will be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center as a three-day event from July 14 (Tuesday) through 16 (Thursday), 2015, with the theme of “Materials innovation driven by advanced characterization.”
