Towards the development of information infrastructure technology which Japan will promote globally

Waseda has long been leading in a variety of cutting edge research and in the production of human resources in the fields of information and communication. For example, the Electrical Communication Department, established in 1942, was among the first established in private universities. Waseda has also been conducting research exchanges with international and domestic private enterprises and institutions, the Japanese government, local governments and other universities.

Background of the agreement

NTT has established a firm position as a world leading comprehensive research development center in the field of information and communication, and has been conducting integrated fundamental research development in a cross-sectional manner in NTT Group. Waseda and NTT have already been involved in collaborative work in a number of joint research projects and joint experiments in fields such as network composition and control technology, network service and information/communication device related technology, and also in human resource exchanges. With the conclusion of the agreement, in order to ensure the maintenance and development of this existing friendly relationship, emphasis will be placed on research activities including creative research approaches and the cultivation of human resources with advanced research development capabilities. Each party's liaison contact points will be unified, and a collaboration council consisting of representatives from both organizations will be formed to enable interorganizational correspondence.

Objectives of the agreement

Under this agreement, the activation and improvement of educational and research activities in Waseda, and the promotion and refinement of efficiency of research and development activities at NTT, will be sought by bringing together Waseda's 125-year accumulation of advanced knowledge, education and research capabilities and NTT's research and development strengths in the field of information and communication. In addition, in order to adequately consider social needs, which have become diversified in the field of information and communication, innovative combinations and various creative collaborations integrating multiple fields will be planned and developed by matching and integrating each party's needs and resources, with constant attention to the goal of bringing the research outcomes into enterprise form. This unique technology with multi-field integration will be disseminated in Japan and to the entire world, with a tendency to focus on the Asian region.

Furthermore, aiming at the cultivation of young researchers and engineers who will be able to lead the world, internships will be activated.
