On 1 April, the Graduate School of System Design and Management and Graduate School of Media Design were established as part of Keio University's 150th Anniversary Commemorative Project, aiming at fostering innovative leaders in complex fields. The innovative curriculum has drawn international attention.
Following is the outline of the two graduate schools;
1. Graduate School of System Design and Management (SDM)
SDM aims at restructuring today's technology and social systems and will offer a melting pot for fusion of various fields and standpoints. It also aims at fostering creative designers (creative system designers) and project managers (innovative project leaders) to lead the "S3 (Safety, Symbiosis and Sustainability)" technology and social systems. For that purpose, SDM has adopted the "design project", which is to design a virtual project system as a team. Also, ALPS (Active Learning Program Sequence), a joint-education program with Stanford University and MIT, will be offered as a core subject.
Number of admissions:
Master's Course: 77 per year (total 154)
Doctor's Course: 11 per year (total 33)
2. Graduate School of Media Design (KMD)
In the modern creative society of the 21st century, creative leaders must understand the core creative skills of design, technology, management, and policy, and also integrate these skills. KMD aims at fostering these leaders as "Media Innovators".
KMD provides a hands-on curriculum balancing the 4 skills, including a practical research project called REAL PROJECTS to study real issues confronted in the society in the field of media design through academic-industrial alliance. At the same time, in order to foster Media Innovators who take initiatives in the global community, it also focuses on improving communication and language skills.
Number of admissions:
Master's Course: 80 per year (total 160)
Doctor's Course: 10 per year (total 30)
The student and researcher of the two graduate schools will be based in Mita Campus until fall of 2008, and will move to Hiyoshi Campus as soon as the construction of "Collaboration Complex", a new building complex is completed.
