USM TO BE MORE ANIMAL-FRIENDLY

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) hopes to continue in its efforts towards creating a sustainable campus, including efforts towards creating an animal-friendly university.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said this is very significant, especially with the establishment of the School of Biological Sciences in USM.

He said that to date, PPSK has conducted various researches related to animals, including frogs, worms, birds and others.

“However, USM has not delved further into research that truly focuses on animals. Now that there is collaboration with relevant parties, we believe the time has come to focus on realizing our hopes, thereby creating a campus that not only places importance on research but also one that is animal- friendly,” he said.

He said this at a media conference after signing a MoU with Korea National Animal Research Resource Centre (KNARRC). KNARRC was represented by its Director, Gonsup Kim.

Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli said that USM sees the MoU as a positive step towards developing another field focusing on animal research.

The MoU is another important step in the university’s efforts to champion the concept of sustainability in various fields of knowledge,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gonsup in his speech said that KNARRC was established in 1995 and so far has succeeded in setting up 36 research centres in various universities in Korea.

“KNARRC covers various fields of research, including life sciences such as microorganisms, plants, and animals,” he said.

The three-year MoU, amongst others, will be the start for both parties to forge close cooperation, especially in the exchange of expertise, academic staff, research, and students.
