MTE 2021: COVID-19 International Innovation Awards

Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2021 – COVID-19 International Innovation Awards returns from 14-18 June 2021 with a virtual show, allowing immersive experience for visitors with live interactions.

It has been more than a year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed millions of lives and changed the way each of us interacts with and navigates the new norms. The disruptions caused by this pandemic have also ignited an explosion of ideas and innovations. The organizer of the Malaysia Technology Expo believes many such innovative efforts that can be instrumental in the response and recovery efforts deserves recognition and to share these innovations with the global community, and build connections for commercialization.

MTE introduced the Inaugural COVID-19 International Innovation Awards last year, which was held as an online event.  This year, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2021 – COVID-19 International Innovation Awards, virtual event returns from 14-18 June 2021 with a virtual show, allowing immersive experience for visitors with live interactions. The event is supported by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, International Federation of Inventors Association and Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM).

The Awards aims to honor innovators and showcase their innovations, technologies, ideas, initiatives and new business models in response to the global pandemic. The winners will be announced and published on the virtual platform https://ibentos.com/mte2021/, on 17th June 2021. All innovations entries will be exhibited in the COVID-19 International Innovation Awards virtual platform. 

Special thanks go to Malaysian Technical University Network, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Smart Manufacturing Research Institute and Non-Destructive Biomed Pharma Research Centre for being the Awards Partners, and Chairing the Awards Committee. This year, despite the ongoing pandemic and strict government SOPs on movement, we have received over 101 entries. 85 entries were shortlisted, and these are from Malaysia, Ukraine, India, Iran, Kuwait, Taiwan, Hong Kong, UK, Thailand and other countries. Participants will compete in 17 categories covering the entire spectrum from prevention to tracking, individual to group technologies and ideas, business concept to humanitarian efforts. 

The 17 categories are:

  4. Communications
  5. Humanitarian Support
  6. Transport & Logistics
  7. ICT
  8. Education
  9. Economy & Employment Support
  10. Vulnerable Group & Community Support
  11. Government & Policy
  12. Building & Construction
  13. Health & Fitness
  14. Materials & Packaging
  15. Media & Entertainment
  16. Non-Profit & Social Enterprise
  17. Business Models, Marketing & Branding 

The Jury, comprised of experts in scientific and research fields, upper echelon of education institution, and professionals from industries.  Jurors will be tasked with refining these down based on demanding criteria.  The panel of jurors are from Malaysia, Australia, India, Brunei, USA, Singapore, Thailand and other countries. 

There are four classes of presentation: gold, awarded to the winner; silver, awarded to the runner-up; and bronze, awarded to the third place; with Best Innovation Award for each category. In addition, Ourstanding Innovations will also win Special Foreign Awards sponsored by:

•           International Federation of Inventors’ Association (IFIA)
•           Euro Business-Haller
•           Indonesian Innovation and Invention Promotion Association (INNOPA)
•           Turkish Inventors & Innovators Network
•           Chinese Innovation & Invention Society (Taiwan)
•           Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI)
•           National STEM Association   
•           Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM)

And to top it all, the most outstanding Innovation will receive recognition Awards from Best Innovation Award by YB Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, Prime Minister's Office (Special Functions).

The event will be officially opened by YB Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) on 14th June 2021 at 10.00 am.

The Results Announcement Ceremony will be graced by:

•          YB Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan bin Md Yusof, Minister in the Prime Minister Office (Special Functions) and

•          YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Adham bin Baba, Minister of Health Malaysia.

•          YB Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Minister of Higher Education Malaysia.
