UPM Student Wins International Architecture Competition in SAIE Selection 10 in Italy

BOLOGNA – A former student of the Faculty of Design and Architecture (FRSB) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Mohd Ramadan Shahabudin, 24, did the country proud when he won the Metal & Glass (student category) for the design of buildings based on metal and glass at the SAIE Selection 10 architectural competition held recently.

He was the sole representative from Asia out of 36 participations to win the prestigious competition dominated by the European countries including the host Italy, Denmark, Poland, Romania and Ireland.

Ramadan’s design fascinated the jury because of the futuristic concept, applying the green technology strategy, including maximum design for quality working environment that reflects on health, energy conservation and to reduce greenhouse effects.

"My designs are not only concerned with the environment, but also provide a positive impact on employees and reflects the aesthetic values of the futuristic building.

"I joined this contest not just to get global recognition, but for the disclosure of relevant science and technology in design and materials used in this architecture," he said.

According to Ramadan, although most students of architecture are bound to the scientific principles that might restrict their creativity, he initially designed with aesthetic values in mind before adjusting his masterpiece in accordance with scientific standards in order for the design to be materialized realistically.

"I have sketched numerous designs before taking into account the aspects of science," he said.

Green technology will remain the main feature in his future design and he aims to apply this concept as part of his identity as an architect in line with the government's initiatives in fostering green technology.
