UPM Researchers Gold Recipient of Malaysia Nuclear Innovation Award 2008

Three Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) researchers swept three gold awards at the Malaysia Nuclear Innovation Award 2008 in line with the Innovation Nuclear Agency Day held recently.

BANGI, July 31 – Three Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) researchers swept three gold awards at the Malaysia Nuclear Innovation Award 2008 in line with the Innovation Nuclear Agency Day held recently.

Department of Computer Systems and Communication Engineering of UPM Faculty of Engineering lecturer, Dr. M. Iqbal Saripan succeeded in winning one gold medal alongside the President Trophy and cash prize of RM 1000 through his “Early Breast Cancer Detection using Wire Mesh Collimator Gamma Camera” project.

“The research is capable of elevating the effectiveness of picture quality using new collimated structure in cameras which can detect tumors and cancers at an earlier stage,” said Dr. M. Iqbal.

The awarding ceremony was organized by Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT), held last July 16 until July 18.

Out of three gold medals offered, Malaysian Nuclear Agency won two and UPM won one.

UPM also garnered two silver medals through Assoc. Prof Dr. Mohd Basyarudin Abd. Rahman from the Faculty of Science and bronze medal through Prof. Dr. Elias Saion from Department of Physics, UPM in the same contest.

26 entrants participated the contest including 21 from Malaysian Nuclear Agency, four from UPM, and one from MARDI.

The awarding ceremony was opened by MINT Chief Director, Datuk Dr. Daud Mohamad.
