A multidisciplinary research project headed by Dr. Maricor N. Soriano of the UP National Institute of Physics that aims to provide thorough and quantitative analysis of paintings for art authentication and preventive conservation has been operationalized in an exhibit entitled "Art Beyond Appearances: Caring for Amorsolo’s Legacy." The project was a research collaboration of the UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum (UP Vargas Museum), the National Institute of Physics, and the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute. The Office of the Chancellor supported the research through the Open Grant of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development. The exhibit was opened last February 4, 2009 at the Kawilihan Gallery, UP Vargas Museum. The occasion was graced with the presence of Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development Luis Sison, members of the Amorsolo family, Dean Virgilio Almario of the College of Arts and Letters, Dean Caesar Saloma of the College of Science, and Dean Rowena Cristina Guevara of the College of Engineering.
The "Art Beyond Appearances: Caring for Amorsolo’s Legacy" exhibit is a tribute to Fernando Cueto Amorsolo, the Philippines’s first National Artist. His works remain popular both locally and abroad because of his unique painting techniques. Amorsolo’s works have been an important part of the country’s art history. Through the research of Dr. Soriano, the science and technology expertise of researchers in the University was utilized to develop an innovation that will help preserve the treasures of Philippine art.
The "Art Beyond Appearances: Caring for Amorsolo’s Legacy" exhibit is available until May 3, 2009 at the Kawilihan Gallery (2/F) UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center, Roxas Avenue, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The UP Vargas Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am-4:00 pm.
