PENANG 9 DEC: Universiti Sains Malaysia once again carved its name on the world arena when Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Mohamad Wan Bebakar, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia was named the recipient of the International Clinical Award 2010.
The award, conferred by the American College of Endocrinology (ACE)was presented to Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Mohamad by the former director of ACE in a brief ceremony during the14th ACE Congress in Kuala Lumpur, making him the sole endocrinologist from Asia to receive this award.
He received the award for his contributions in improving the quality of service in the treatment for endocrine patients in this country and the Asean region, which then led to the development of ongoing training for medical staff.
When contacted, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Mohamad said that he considered the award an encouragement to him and local medical specialists to redouble their research efforts for the benefit of society.
"Efforts to increase public knowledge regarding endocrine diseases have to be enhanced and this award will spur me on to contribute further towards endocrine treatment in the country," he said.
During his tenure as the President of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (2003-2008) he was responsible for introducing the fellowship programme to train experts in endocrinology. So far, the programme has produced 10 endocrinologists.
