Humanities Diliman Vol. 3 No. 1: Analysis of Traditions in the Philippines

Three articles from the latest issue of Humanities Diliman of the University of the Philippines, Diliman analyze common knowledge in language, arts and society in the Philippines.

The latest issue of the Humanities Diliman journal of the University of the Philippines Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development has compiled five articles, three of which tackle common perspectives on language, art and society in the Philippines. The editor of the journal, Dr. Ana Maria Theresa P. Labrador, refers to these common perspectives as local knowledge: the indigenous or traditional wisdom shared within a community that is always subject to reevaluation.

The article “Ang Dalumat ng Panahon at Espasyo sa Mga Traki ng Dulangan Manobo” (“Time and Space in the Ballads of the Dulangan Manobo”) of Rosario Cruz-Lucero provides a thorough analysis of the local knowledge of time and space among the Dulangan Manobo through the natives’ duyuy nga traki or “narrative chants.” Analyn Ikin V. Salvador-Amores looks into reasons behind tattooing aside from its common representation in connection with headhunting and bravery in “Batek.” In a review of the book Ukkil: Visual Arts of the Sulu Archipelago, Maria Teresa Martinez-Sicat discusses the concept of art in the Sulu Archipelago, South of the Philippines with reference to the Western perceptions.

This volume of Humanities Diliman features two other articles. Ma. Corazon Aspeli-Castro’s “From the Mouths of Babes…and Moms,” is a detailed study on the effectiveness of verbal and nonverbal strategies that mothers use in developing the communication skills of their children. Elmo Gonzaga’s “Anomie and Isolation” presents a different view of Japan. A country that is known for its economic development went through a recession in the 1990s. The adversities in this period are reflected in a novel, an animé film and an animé series that Gonzaga analyzes.
